The Great Hyrule Concerto

a zine dedicated to the musician of hyrule and his creations-- octavo!

[email protected]

about
The Great Hyrule Concerto is a free, digital zine celebrating the musical diversity in The Legend of Zelda: Cadence of Hyrule, conducted by the royal musician himself-- Octavo!
Musicians, artists, and writers will collaborate together to create a journey, following Octavo as he writes and conducts his concerto about the great land of Hyrule, his experiences in it, and the legends and tales of the land.

faqwhat is the concept of this zine?
We want to make an Octavo-centered zine, focusing on Cadence of Hyrule to highlight its music and the musicians in the Zelda cimmunity. The pieces in the zine will follow Octavo across Hyrule, describing his adventures, experiences, and the legends of the land that any good bard would sing about!
Creators will work together to create pieces in appreciation for Octavo, wether it be fics and artwork about his life and adventures, or the pieces he has composed himself to share with the world. These will be accompanied by musical pieces about Hyrule's History and the bard's play in it. Think: what would octavo write/sing about? Will this zine include things from Crypt of the Necrodancer?
As Cadence of Hyrule is a crossover game with Crypt of the Necrodancer, references and elements from Crypt of the Necrodancer are welcome, so long as it still fits in with the Cadence of Hyrule universe!
Are OCs/AUs allowed?
OC's are allowed and AU's that fit within the theme of the zine and with mod approval are allowed.
Is shipping allowed?
Ships might be allowed but will not be the main focus on the zine, so make sure to check with a mod first!
What/How many creator types will you be accepting?
Our exact answer will depend on the amount of applications! But for now we are looking for artists, writers, and musicians (digital merch artists will be considered depending on the number of applications). For artists we currently plan to accept up to ~30 and for musicians up to ~8.
Can I apply for more then one position?
You are welcome to apply for several positions but will only be accepted for one!
What kinds of music will you allow contributors to make?
We are open to all kinds of music from covers to original songs and from orchestral arrangements to songs with lyrics and vocals! As long as it fits the theme of the zine, a variety of music will be welcome!
How many musicians are you planning to accept? We currently plan to accept up to ~8 musicians! How newcomer friendly is this zine?Anyone with any zine experience level is welcome to apply! Having participated in a zine before isn't necessary. What kind of examples should a musician have in their portfolio? We will be asking for musicians to include examples of some of their top pieces as well as a link to their portfolio in the application. But whether this includes covers, original songs, arrangements, live-recordings, etc. that is up to the applicant! But we encourage applicants to include examples of things that best match what you'd be interested in making for the zine and show off your strengths there! What are pitches?
The pitches are your ideas that you want to draw/write/compose for the zine! Just describe three ideas you'd be interested in making for the zine. However detailed you want to make the description is up to you, but try to give us an idea of what you want to do!
What is spot art?
Spot art is an optional thing artists can do for the zine! In addition to the full page illustration each artist will be making, they can also be paired up with a writer to make a smaller illustration to go with their fic!
What is a collab?
A collab is between an artists and a writer or an artist and a musician. Each artists will make a full-page piece for the zine. This can be done solo or the artist can be paired with a writer or a musician to make a full piece that matches up with the writer's fic or acts as "cover art" for the musician's piece. Each pair will work together to plan their pieces. This is not the same thing as a spotart, which can be done in addition to this.
What are sample pieces?
The three samples pieces asked for in the application are what you would consider your top three pieces and the best examples of the type of work you'd create for the zine. They give the mods a quick look at the type of work you do! For each sample, please attach a link that goes directly to an individual piece.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection pieces you've made that showcase your best work! Oftentimes this is a google drive link, a Youtube or Bandcamp account, or an art-only social media account, but it doesn't have to be! This gives mods more examples showing the type of work you make, your style, and your range!
What kind of pitches are you accepting?
This zine is themed around Cadence of Hyrule and Octavo, so pitches should fit that theme! Specifically, this theme is centered on Octavo and his adventures across Hyrule. This can be pieces from Octavo's perspective, events that happened to him, or something he would sing about as a bard! This includes both events shown in game and events that may have happened off-screen or before/after the game takes place!

contributor roleswriters
fic writers will be in charge of writing stories about our favorite musican, octavo! these will be centered around octavo as a character, so you may dive into his backstory, write about his adventures or go into his thoughts and feelings!
poets will be in charge of writing poems either about octavo himself, similar to the fic writers, or write a poem from octavo's perspective! perhaps once he wrote a love poem, or an ode to the kingdom? it's up to you to decide!
lyricists will create song lyrics from octavo's perspective. this means the songs will be about hyrule and its legends, about octavo's friends, and other tales. the key to these lyrics is to think what would a bard of hyrule sing about?
artists
spread artists will be focused on one or two page artworks focused on octavo's character. pieces involving octavo and other characters and the way they interact with his surroundings are to be expected. short comics are also welcome.
page + spot artists will be working alongside writers to give their creations a splash of color. talk with your team and create a piece that best fits the story. page art is a full page illustration to go with the story, while spot art will be smaller illustrations spread between the writing.
music "cover" artists will be collaborating with musicians to create pieces that represent their musical tracks. think of it this way: if the song were to release as a single or in an album, it'd need stunning cover art to go with it!
musicians
musicians are our guest stars, since the focus of the zine is a concert directed by octavo himself! we want musicians to come up with pieces as if octavo himself were to play them. create your musical pieces inspired by cadence of hyrule to celebrate its musical diversity and celebrate the music man himself!
